Resources for Business
Commencing in 2001, the Australian Government started working with businesses, through Partnerships Against Domestic Violence - A Business Approach (PADV-ABA), to raise awareness within the workplace of the issue of domestic violence and its impacts on the corporate sector. The initiative has included the development, dissemination and promotion of resources to support business on the issue of domestic violence.
The range of resources developed include a training manual, 'Domestic Violence and the Workplace: Training Manual', with accompanying PowerPoint presentation, 'Domestic Violence: A Workplace Handbook' and companion resources such as business card-sized crisis contact cards, workplace posters and a video.
In June 2004 a series of breakfast and luncheon seminars was held around Australia to launch the newly developed training manual and handbook. The events were held in Adelaide, Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne, Canberra, Perth and Hobart. Each seminar featured a presentation by an expert guest speaker in either human resource management or domestic violence issues, followed by interactive role-plays to bring the issue to life.
The primary audience for both the resources and the events was public and private sector human resources managers and community agencies with whom businesses may develop productive relationships.
Many businesses have commenced the introduction of policies to manage and deal with the impact of domestic violence in their organisations. Activities they have undertaken include:
- supplying information on the company intranet on domestic violence;
- running awareness campaigns within their organisations;
- engaging speakers on domestic violence to speak at company-sponsored events;
- displaying information on domestic violence services; and
- running training sessions for managers.
