Partnerships Phase 1 Priority Areas

A total of $25.3 million was committed by the Australian Government for the first phase of Partnerships. Over 100 projects were conducted across Australia focusing on six priority themes:

Working with children and young people to break the cycle of violence between generations. Projects within this theme aimed to develop a range of interventions with children at risk of witnessing or experiencing violence in their families, to alleviate the effects of this experience and to reduce the risk of perpetrating this behaviour in adulthood.

Working with adults to break patterns of violence, working with victims and violent men. These projects aimed to increase protection of victims of violence and develop innovative support services including new programs for offenders.

Working with the community, educating against violence. Projects in this category aimed to raise community awareness, inform women and children of legal rights and community support and help friends and family support them more effectively. Two national campaigns were conducted to raise awareness of domestic violence: in Indigenous communities; and culturally and linguistically diverse communities.

Protecting people at risk. These projects sought to reform legislation as required and improve responses by police and courts, especially in regards to cross-border issues.

Information and best practice. These projects aimed to analyse and disseminate data to promote best practice, and research areas where new information was needed to support services.

Helping people in rural and remote communities. These projects aimed to explore special approaches to overcoming barriers to obtaining assistance - barriers such as community attitudes and lack of access to services.
