Women in Australia - 1999

Women in Australia cover pageThe Minister Assisting the Prime Minister for Women's Issues, Senator the Hon. Jocelyn Newman, has launched the first edition of the Office of the Status of Women's new publication, Women in Australia .

Women in Australia replaces the Australian Women's Year Book offering an exciting new format that provides a detailed portrait of the experiences, roles, interests and concerns of Australian women.

The publication collates and analyses a range of statistical information on women, including data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics, to present a comprehensive statistical profile of women's lives.

It also introduces several core tables that will enable women's progress in crucial areas to be identified as future editions are published.

A new section has been included that summarises a number of recent Government initiatives that have benefited Australian women and some of the achievements of many remarkable women.

Each edition of Women in Australia will also include a paper examining a topical issue. This year's edition features a paper on older women to mark the International Year of Older Persons.

The paper, which was written by Dr Diane Gibson, Mrs Christine Benham and Ms Edith Gray from the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare, provides a fascinating insight into the changes in women's lives over the century. It examines four generations of women born between 1905-1950, celebrating the achievements in women's lives across generations and drawing out areas of continuing need as we move into the twenty-first century.

Women in Australia 1999 can be purchased from Australian Government Bookshops around the nation from 13 December 1999.
