Women's Development Programme 2000-2001
In 2000-2001 OfW funded inter alia :- ten projects that contribute to policies and strategies benefitting women; and
- targetted capacity building assistance for three organisations.
PROJECT FUNDING - UP TO $25,000 EACH
Association of Women Educators - $9,000
The second phase of the Pregnancy, Parenting and School Completion project has produced best practice guidelines for school communities to support girls and young women who are mothers (or pregnant) to complete their secondary education.
A publication, Present Pregnant and Proud, Keeping pregnant students and young mums in education , has been produced. Documentation of a pilot community capacity building approach to supporting pregnant and parenting students is available.
Breast Cancer Network Australia (BCNA) - $25,000
Having a Seat at the Table: Women with Breast Cancer as Active Participants
in Policy and Decision-Making is the second phase of a project initially
funded by OfW in 1999-00. The project has activated, coordinated and evaluated
a national strategy for recruiting and appointing women with breast cancer
as effective consumer representatives in all areas of decision-making about
the disease in Australia.
A project report, a map of current consumer representation in cancer organisations, and statistics of consumer representatives recruited, are available.
National Association of Services Against Sexual Violence (NASASV) - $25,000
This project conducted an audit on sexual assault services for women and children
from Indigenous and Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Backgrounds to
identify best practice, with the aim of increasing the use of services by
target groups. This is the second phase of a project initially funded by
OfW in 1999-00.

National Council of Single Mothers and their Children - $25,000
Single Mothers Working Strategies Network Australia. Building on
last year's successful Sole Parent Proud project, funded by OfW,
networks for single parent families in regional, rural and remote areas will
provide mentoring, friendship and training in leadership and decision-making
activities.
This project provides an Australia-wide email discussion list, website, and a hard copy and online publication dealing with successful strategies used by single mothers in addressing problems in balancing family and work/education demands.
National Women's Justice Coalition - $25,000
Through Our Eyes : Stage 2 builds on a conference held in June 2000 which examined the types of problems relating to the law and legal protection for women living in regional, rural and remote Australia. The project enhances legal access for women in regional, rural and remote areas through links and information flows between Government and services, networks and communities in regional, rural and remote Australia.
A fortnightly Email Bulletin commenced in February 2001. A Project Promotional Sheet, Email Discussion List, Threaded Message Board and Website and Self-Posting Message Board have all been developed.
Older Women's Network of Australia - ($25,000)
The project sought information from older women concerning the ideas and expectations they have about a supportive neighbourhood or community and encouraged participation in community leadership roles. The project also sought to identify and overcome barriers to older women being involved in a community.
A resource kit on ideas on how to establish and maintain supportive neighbourhoods is available.
Women With Disabilities Australia - $25,000
A national forum examined legal issues regarding the reproductive rights of women with disabilities under the sterilisation and reproductive health of women with disabilities project.

Women's Industry Network Seafood Community - $25,000
The project focussed on the need to achieve balanced and effective representation of seafood women in decision-making at Board, Council and Governing body levels. It aimed to provide professional development, support and mentoring for the promotion of women in the seafood industry into leadership and decision-making roles.
A resource kit has been developed to support seafood organisations as they move towards the gender balance representation of women in decision-making. In addition, a research report on the findings of a survey conducted to determine the number of seafood women represented on industry boards is now available.

Women's Rights Action Network Australia - $10,000
Gender Integration in Mainstream Non-Government Organisations . This project arranged the delivery of a workshop to mainstream NGOs to discuss best practice in integrating gender into their policy work, and developed a report of the workshop to assist the learning of other organisations.
Womensport Australia - $6,000
A national database has been developed to advance women in sport leadership. It will assist in promoting suitably qualified women into sports leadership and senior management positions.
CAPACITY BUILDING, $10,000 EACH
$30,000 was divided equally between three organisations to provide targeted support to assist them to build a policy profile relevant to mainstream (public, private sector and philanthropic funding and policy bodies). These organisations are:
- Guides of Australia: financial assistance was provided for the first Guides National Convention, Imagine Your Future - Convention 2001 , held in Tasmania in July 2001.
- The Catholic Women's League: to develop a Policy and Procedures Manual.
- Women's Action Alliance: to upgrade IT resources and capacity, including training of WAA personnel; undertake skills training survey of WAA members to identify the gaps; develop WAA website as a promotional and education tool; develop membership lobbying skills and forge partnerships, including those with other NGOs; and arrange and hold a WAA Training Convention in Canberra.
