Private Sector Boards

Women are under-represented in private sector boards. The best available Australian information about women's participation on private sector boards is the annual survey by executive search consultants, Korn/Ferry International.

The 2004 Australian Census of Women in Leadership completed by the Equal Opportunity for Women in the Workplace Agency, reported that women held just 8.6 per cent of board directorships and 47.1 per cent of companies had no women on their boards.

Over the past 2 years, under the Women's Development Programme, OfW has provided funding to the National Foundation for Australian Women (NFAW) to further develop the Women on Boards website and for its project "Women on Boards goes National". As part of the project, NFAW surveyed over 400 organisations, including more than 300 of Australia's Top 500 publicly listed companies. The results are available from the Women on Boards website.
