Announcement of Australia's Delegation to the 47th Session of the CSW
MEDIA RELEASE3 March 2003
Senator Amanda Vanstone , Minister for Family & Community Services and Minister Assisting the Prime Minister for Women's Issues
I am delighted to announce Australia's Delegation to the 47th Session of the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women. The Hon. Jackie Kelly, MP will head the Delegation to the Commission, to be held in New York between the 3-14 March 2003. Sex Discrimination Commissioner, Pru Goward will also participate in the Delegation.
Australia is achieving some of the greatest advances for gender equality in the world and making real contributions to strengthening the Commission's ability to achieve outcomes for women.
The Commission's focus this year is on:
- violence against women and women's human rights, with a particular focus on the trafficking of women and girls; and
- the participation and access of women to the media and information and communication technologies.
Australia will be using this opportunity to encourage the UN to focus on practical ways to achieve real improvements in the lives of women and girls as well as encouraging the sharing of best practice amongst countries.
Australia will share its considerable experience and knowledge in working to eliminate violence against women with the international community and to encourage other countries to take forward our shared commitments to women.
Australia's Country Statement, to be delivered at the Commission, highlights the Government's efforts and its commitment to ongoing work that improves the status of women in Australia and around the world.
