Our Executive Director

Julia Burns took up the role of Executive Director of the Australian Government’s Office for Women in late October 2006. 

She has a background in social policy (including child care and disability policy and programs) and in corporate areas. Julia has been a senior executive in the Australian Public Service for over a decade.  Her previous roles include managing the Government’s VIP transport service, COMCAR, during the Sydney Olympics, and leading human resources reforms in a number of large government agencies. 

Julia has established and led women’s networks in several government departments, and takes a very keen interest in mentoring and supporting women into senior executive roles.

Julia has an Honours degree in Communications.

She was raised in Lithgow NSW, studied in Sydney and has lived in Canberra since 1988.  She is married and gets great happiness from sharing in the lives of her husband’s two sons and three grandchildren.
